Tips from our drivers for Hotel Rye

  • Summer and school holidays bring heavy traffic along Point Nepean Road, so book return trips early.
  • Make an evening of it with a walk on Rye pier before dinner.
  • Staying at the foreshore campground? We can pick you up from the entrance nearest your site.

Hotel Rye is a pub and dining venue on Point Nepean Road, facing the foreshore and the long Rye pier. It is a gathering place for locals year-round and fills with holidaymakers over summer, when Rye’s foreshore camping ground and beaches are packed.

We run guests here from holiday houses in Tootgarook, Blairgowrie and Rosebud, and from the camping grounds along the foreshore. After a meal and a few drinks, a booked taxi home is easier than finding the car again in the dark. We also take people on to Sorrento, Portsea or the hot springs at Fingal. Holidaymakers often ask us for a combined trip, starting at Hotel Rye for lunch and continuing to Sorrento or Portsea for the afternoon. Out of season, when Rye is calmer, locals book us for midweek dinners and catch-ups with friends.

For travellers with mobility needs, our wheelchair accessible van has a rear ramp, and the Maxi WAT has a hydraulic hoist and room for two wheelchairs plus six seated passengers. All our wheelchair vehicles have four-point restraints and air-conditioning, which helps on hot summer evenings.

Questions about taxis to Hotel Rye

Can you pick us up from the Rye foreshore campground?

Yes. Tell us which section of the foreshore you are staying in and the nearest entrance or landmark, and we will meet you there. It is worth booking your return from Hotel Rye at the same time, as taxis on the southern peninsula are in heavy demand over summer.

Is there a taxi for a group going from Hotel Rye to Sorrento?

Yes. Sedans carry up to four passengers, and the Maxi WAT seats up to eight when no wheelchairs are aboard. Let us know your group size and destination, and we will suggest the best option. Booking ahead is wise on summer evenings when Point Nepean Road is busy.

Where will you drop me off at Hotel Rye?

Pick-up is on Point Nepean Road in front of the hotel. In peak summer traffic we may stop just along the road, and we will let you know where.

Can you wait or pick me up after my appointment at Hotel Rye?

Yes. Book a return trip with an approximate time, then call or text us when you are ready. Appointments often run late, so we keep return pick-ups flexible.

Is there step-free access at Hotel Rye?

We drop you outside the hotel on Point Nepean Road, across from the Rye foreshore.

Can I travel in my power wheelchair or scooter?

Yes. Most manual and power wheelchairs fit, and you stay seated in your chair. Tell us the make, width and weight when you book so we send the right vehicle. Mobility scooters can travel when they can be safely restrained — please check with us first.

Can a carer or family member come too?

Yes. Carers, family and assistance animals are welcome. Include everyone in the passenger count so we send a vehicle with enough seats.

How do I pay?

Pay the driver by card or cash, use your Multi Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP) card, or choose "Account / invoice" for NDIS plan managers, aged-care providers and businesses.
