Discharge tips

  • Book a “pick up when ready” trip ahead: choose the day, then tap “I’m ready” on your booking page (or call us) when the ward lets you go.
  • Discharge often takes longer than planned — waiting for medicines, a doctor’s sign-off or transport letters is normal. We only send the car when you are ready.
  • Have your discharge letter, medicines and any walking aids with you, and tell us if you need help from the ward to the car.
  • Travelling with a wheelchair or a carer? Say so when you book so we send the right vehicle.

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to cancer treatment, research and education. It is located in the Parkville health precinct, in a building it shares with other cancer services, and treats patients from all over Victoria.

Peninsula patients may be referred to Peter Mac for specialist treatment, surgery, clinical trials or second opinions. Treatment often involves repeated visits, and the drive into Parkville, combined with city parking, can be exhausting for patients who are already tired from their therapy. Family members are not always able to take time off for every appointment. Some patients also take part in clinical trials or have scans and consultations on separate days. Keeping track of all those trips is easier when the travel is simply booked, confirmed by SMS or email, and taken care of on the day.

Taxi Peninsula provides door-to-door trips from home to the Peter Mac entrance and back. Carers are welcome to come along, and passengers who use a wheelchair can travel in it in our wheelchair accessible vans or Maxi WAT. We show a fare estimate when you book, give fixed quotes on request, and accept NDIS and aged-care accounts and MPTP cards.

How long does it take to get to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre?

A rough guide without traffic. We allow extra time for loading your wheelchair.

I feel unwell after treatment. Will the driver help?
